Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed - non-removable - application for holding artificial or false teeth. These types of bridges are an excellent way to replace missing teeth.

Fixed Dental Bridges

Are Used to...

  • Fill in gaps and space left by missing teeth
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
  • Maintain facial or the shape of the mouth
  • Restore chewing and speaking ability
  • Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental application

There are several types of bridges but each patient's case is unique to their oral situation. A traditional bridge is normally with metal infused with porcelain. This bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth, aka abutment teeth. They are then attached to artificial teeth known as pontics.

Dental bridges will last many years and are very durable in most cases. They may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear and (pardon the pun) tear.

Designing a Fixed Dental Bridge

For most, fixed dental bridges requires two or more visits. During the first visit, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Then, an accurate mold is made which will be sent to the dental laboratory; during this process, the patient will receive a temporary bridge that will be made and can be worn for several weeks until the fabrication of the permanent bridge is completed.

At the second visit, the permanent bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper and more importantly - comfortable fit. Occasionally Dr. Newman may only temporarily cement the bridge, allowing your teeth and tissue time to get used to the new bridge. This new bridge can be permanently cemented at a later time depending on the unique case.
