Fear of undergoing dental work is one of the most common phobias among people of all ages. While modern dentistry is safer and more comfortable for patients than ever before, many people remain extremely anxious about visiting the dentist. At the practice of cosmetic dentist Clint Newman, we understand exactly how daunting dental work can be, which is why we do everything in our power to make the dental experience as pleasant and stress-free as possible for our valued patients.

Many of the patients who turn to our dental practice have avoided the dentist for so long that they require reconstruction of their entire mouths. Such patients are faced with two obstacles: the anxiety that prevented them from going to the dentist in the first place, and the prospect of having to undergo a series of complex procedures to reconstruct their mouths. It is with these patients in mind that we offer true sleep dentistry.

At our dental practice in Nashville, sedation is provided by Dr. Matthew Yezerski, who is licensed to provide general anesthesia. This means that patients who undergo dental reconstruction can be put completely under during their treatment. The benefits of true sleep dentistry are numerous, and it has allowed many patients who would otherwise have avoided the crucial dental work they needed to restore form and function to their mouths.

What Is True Sleep Dentistry?

Many dentists who claim to provide “sleep” dentistry are actually misusing the phrase (which is why you’ll often find the word “sleep” contained within quotation marks on dental websites). Most forms of dental sedation do not induce unconsciousness. Rather, they put patients in states of deep relaxation, making them generally oblivious to the work being done but still able to respond to questions and other stimuli. To be certain, oral conscious sedation, nitrous oxide sedation, and IV sedation are effective; however, they do not offer certain benefits provided by true sleep dentistry, especially for patients who have to undergo complex oral reconstruction.

While under general anesthesia, patients are completely unconscious; yet, because they are monitored at all times by a licensed anesthesiologist, they are also completely safe. True sleep dentistry allows patients to experience literally none of their treatment; they are sleeping pleasantly as Dr. Newman surgically installs dental implants, extracts damaged teeth, and performs other complex treatments. They experience absolutely no pain and emerge from their appointment with absolutely no memory of their treatment. At no point do patients experience any of the sights, sounds, smells, or other sensations associated with the dental work they dread.

For those with extreme dental anxiety, true sleep dentistry is the clear choice, especially for those in need of full mouth reconstruction.
