What Is an Overbite?
During the consultation, the doctor will take a series of X-rays to determine the extent of your malocclusion (bite disorder). Malocclusion can occur for any number of reasons, such as birth defects, thumb sucking, mismatched teeth, or jaw injury.
When your top and bottom teeth are incorrectly aligned, it can lead to dental damage, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, and a host of other concerns. It is estimated that one out of every five people in the United States have some form of malocclusion. So there’s a good chance if you’re reading this, your jaw may be misaligned.
A class one malocclusion, also referred to as an overbite, is the most common. This is when the front top teeth overlap the front bottom teeth as the teeth fit together. Although some degree of overbite is normal, if greater than 25 percent, you may experience jaw pain and dental wear and tear. Because it’s possible to have straight teeth and still have a bite disorder, it’s important to visit a dentist about the pain you or your child may be experiencing so treatment can be administered sooner rather than later.
How Invisalign Can Help
If one of our doctors determines that you are a good candidate, impressions will be taken of your top and bottom teeth and sent to an Invisalign lab. There, technicians will design a series of trays based on the severity of your dental misalignment.
Once the trays are complete and they arrive at our facility, the doctor will fit you with the first set, while also carefully outlining the treatment plan and how to care for your aligners. To receive the most out of your treatment, each set of aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day consistently for two weeks, and only removed for eating and cleaning. After two weeks, you will upgrade to the next tray in the series. Every six to eight weeks, the doctor will monitor your results.
As your teeth move into their proper positions, your bite will begin to improve. You may feel some mild to moderate dental and jaw pain as your teeth begin to shift. This is completely normal and can be eliminated with over-the-counter pain medication. Invisalign provides less pressure than traditional braces, so many patients find this treatment more comfortable for a number of reasons.
