Chances are, you know about dental implants, especially if you are considering options for teeth replacement. Implants are incredibly versatile and can serve as anchors for a variety of restorations, including crowns, bridges, and dentures. You may be wondering how long this type of treatment takes. Here, we will explore the details of your dental implant treatment timeline, and what you can expect as a patient at our Nashville, TN, practice.

Initial Consultation

Before treatment planning can begin, Dr. Clint Newman must see you for a comprehensive consultation. During this visit, he will perform a full oral assessment and discuss your medical history. X-rays and scans will also be taken so the health of the underlying structures can be evaluated. After this examination, Dr. Newman will be able to determine your eligibility for dental implants.

Preparatory Procedures

Not everyone will require preparatory procedures before dental implant placement. However, those with insufficient bone density may necessitate a bone grafting procedure to add volume to the jawbone. Preparatory procedures may add several months to your total treatment timeline, but most patients agree it is well worth it. Bone grafting can help you enjoy predictable and successful long-term treatment.

Implant Surgery

When you are ready, we will schedule you for your implant surgery. Depending on the case, this may be performed at an oral surgery practice. While you do not have to be sedated, many patients choose this option to keep them comfortable during their appointment. Your implants can be placed in about one hour. Generally, there is minimal soreness following the procedure, and most patients can resume normal activity in 24 to 48 hours.

Temporary Restoration

If necessary, we will provide you with a temporary restoration, particularly if the implant was placed toward the front of your smile. Temporary restorations can range from Essix retainers, temporary partials, provisional crowns, and more. Dr. Newman will help you choose an option that will be most comfortable and convenient for you. We understand your appearance is important, and we will never leave spaces or gaps in your smile while you are healing.

Healing Phase

Once your implants are placed, they will most likely need to heal for several months. During this time, a process called osseointegration will take place, which is when your bone tissue will fuse to the titanium implant post. This will provide a strong foundation for your future restoration. The length of the healing phase will depend on several factors, including the complexity of the case and your own body’s healing capacity. On average, patients will be ready for their final restorations between three and nine months after their implant placement.

Placement of Restoration

Once osseointegration has completed, you will be ready to receive your final restoration. To do this, any temporary restorations will be removed, impressions will be taken, and your final crown, bridge, or denture will be fabricated in a dental lab. When your final restoration is ready, it will be attached to your implants using a high-grade dental cement or screw-retention. Dr. Newman will choose a method that will be the most beneficial for you.
