Dental Implants Procedure

Adult tooth loss is a dental problem that negatively affects the health, function, and aesthetics of the mouth. Because of the cosmetic and aesthetic advantages, as well as the superior comfort, convenience, and support, dental implants are often considered the best restorative treatment for missing teeth. For our patients in Nashville, the dental implants treatment process takes place in several stages. Cosmetic dentist Clint Newman discusses every step of the procedure before treatment begins so that his patients are well-informed and prepared for what to expect throughout treatment.

Initial Consultation

Dental implants treatment process begins with Dr. Newman and you on the initial patient consultation. This consultation allows Dr. Newman to thoroughly examine the teeth, gums, and jaw to determine if dental implants are a viable option for the patient. If the patient is a good candidate for dental implants, as is often the case, Dr. Newman will determine specifications of the treatment plan that will best meet the unique needs of each patient. Throughout this consultation, Dr. Newman will explain how treatment will proceed and patients are encouraged to ask any questions that come to mind. It is our goal that patients leave this initial consultation feeling informed and confident about the plan for their dental implants treatment.

Implant Placement

Dental implants treatment will begin with the surgical placement of the dental implants. The implants are actually tiny titanium screws that will be placed in the jaw bone where they will act as artificial tooth roots. With the patient under the effects of anesthesia, a small hole will be made in the gum at the site of the dental implant. The implant will be inserted into the jaw and a protective cover will be placed over the implant where it will stay throughout the healing period.

Osseointegration

After the initial procedure, a lengthy recovery period will be required to ensure that osseointegration is successful. Osseointegration is the process in which the dental implant fuses with the jaw bone. Dr. Newman will allow for up to six month of healing before proceeding with treatment because the success of osseointegration is vital to the ultimate success of implant treatment.

Placing Temporary Restorations

Once Dr. Newman is satisfied that the implant has fused with the jaw bone, temporary dental restorations will be placed. The gum above the implant will be opened up and the protective cover will be removed from the implant. Dr. Newman will then place a temporary dental restoration and the gums will begin to heal around this restoration.

Permanent Restorations

When the gums have properly healed around the temporary dental restorations, the final step of treatment will take place. Dr. Newman will remove the temporary fixtures and replace them with permanent restorations. Depending on each patient’s needs, the permanent restoration may be a dental crown, dental bridge, or dentures. Once attached to the dental implants, these restorations will look and function just like the patient’s natural teeth.

Schedule A Consultation

While the dental implants treatment process follows these general guidelines, the specifications of treatment will vary based on the unique needs of each patient.
