What makes veneers such a great option?

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers Are Custom-Made to Enhance the Overall Look of Your Smile

Incredibly Natural-Looking Results

Veneers are made from medical-grade porcelain that closely replicates the shine, texture, and color of your natural teeth. Each porcelain veneer placed at Clint Newman, DDS, is customized to your unique features to deliver the most subtle, yet transformative, results.

Comprehensive Coverage

Porcelain veneers are one of the only cosmetic procedures that can address multiple concerns at once. Whether you have stains, chips, gaps, or a combination of several imperfections, veneers can provide complete coverage in a single treatment.

Long-Lasting Outcomes

Thanks to advancements in dentistry, porcelain is becoming increasingly strong and durable. With proper care, many veneers can last up to a decade before needing to be replaced.

Placing a veneer is a relatively simple process...

Are these thin porcelain shells really that strong?

Can porcelain veneers help you?

Veneers Are Most Commonly Used  to Quickly Enhance Your Entire Smile

Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry treatment because they can help you transform your smile in just two appointments. While orthodontic treatment can take several months or even years to correct crowded or gapped teeth, porcelain veneers can help you quickly address these concerns.

For this reason, veneers are a great option for patients who have an important upcoming event such as a wedding, graduation, or public speaking engagement.

What should I look at if I'm considering veneers?

To Qualify for Veneers,  You Should...

Be in Good Oral Health

Before undergoing any cosmetic treatment, you should have a healthy smile. If you have cavities, gum disease, or other outstanding oral health issues, Dr. Clint Newman or Dr. Thomas Underwood will need to treat these prior to placing your veneers.

Have Healthy Enamel

To make room for your veneers, your doctor will need to remove some of your enamel. Therefore, you should have a sufficient amount of enamel if you are considering veneers. If you have thinning enamel, you may still be a good candidate for LUMINEERS®.

Free from Teeth Grinding

Although porcelain veneers are very strong, they are not indestructible. If you grind your teeth excessively, it can increase the risk of fracturing your restorations. In some cases, an oral appliance can help.

Have Correctable Issues

Veneers can treat a wide range of cosmetic concerns. But if you suffer from pronounced misalignment or severely crooked or gapped teeth, you might be a better candidate for other treatments such as braces.

Maintain Realistic Expectations

Veneers are considered a permanent investment and will need to be replaced at some point in the future. You should have realistic expectations about how long they can last before needing replacement.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Although veneers are resistant to stains and decay, your surrounding teeth are not. In order to maintain the results of your procedure, you will need to commit to a good oral hygiene routine after treatment.

But doesn't dental bonding achieve the same results?

Comparing Veneers  vs. Dental Bonding

One of the most commonly used alternatives to porcelain veneers is dental bonding

Although dental bonding is reversible and more cost-effective, it does not offer the same strength, long-term results, or lifelike outcomes as veneers. If these benefits are important to you, then veneers are a worthwhile investment.

What can I expect during treatment?

Veneers Are Designed and Placed over Two Appointments

The Initial Consultation

The first step of the porcelain veneers process is your initial consultation. During this exam, one of our dentists will determine if porcelain veneers are right for you. We will discuss alternative therapies, such as dental bonding, and also review veneers patients' before and after images.

Professional Cleaning

If you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers, the next step of the process will be a regular professional cleaning. This ensures the treated tooth or teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and polished.

Prepping the Teeth

Next, Dr. Newman or Dr. Underwood will need to remove a small amount of structure – generally just a fraction of a millimeter – from the front of each treated tooth in order to accommodate the veneer. However, some types of veneers, such as Lumineers®, may not require any tooth structure to be removed.

Taking an Impression

Once this step is complete, we will take detailed impressions. Along with information on the shade of your veneers and other specifications, these impressions will be used to craft your custom veneers.

Crafting the Restorations

In most cases, your impressions are then sent to a lab where a ceramic artist will create your custom veneers. The restorations will be ready within one or two weeks. In the meantime, we will provide you with temporary veneers to protect your teeth.

Final Adjustments

Once the permanent porcelain veneers are ready, your dentist will check their fit and appearance against the prepped teeth. We will work carefully to make any necessary adjustments to ensure your complete satisfaction.

Placing the Veneers

Lastly, the veneers are carefully cemented in place. Patients will receive detailed instructions for aftercare. Generally, these instructions simply ask that patients follow proper dental hygiene and visit our practice for regular checkups.

What can you expect immediately after treatment?

How to Properly Care for Your Veneers

Veneers require no recovery or downtime. Although your teeth might feel sensitive after the procedure, you will be able to resume your normal activities right away.

In general, you can care for your veneers just like your natural teeth. To protect them from premature damage or fractures, you should avoid certain habits such as:

  • Chewing on ice
  • Biting on pens
  • Flossing up and down vigorously
  • Biting your nails
  • Opening packages using your teeth

If your veneers become damaged, do not attempt to repair them at home. This can lead to even further damage, so call our office immediately to explore your treatment options.

More Reasons to Choose Veneers

Have you ever wanted to have a smile that looks absolutely stunning? One that makes great impressions and looks completely natural? This is something that is not impossible, even if you have major stains, discolorationchips, cracks, or problems with tooth spacing and alignment. By meeting with Nashville, TN, cosmetic dentist Clint Newman, you can learn about many different treatment options that can make your smile look its very best.

One particular option that can make a major difference in terms of the look and quality of your smile is porcelain veneers. Let’s look at the porcelain veneers procedure and how it can enhance your smile.

Seamless Enhancement

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic that are placed on the front portions of your teeth in order to conceal aesthetic flaws from view. When in place, no one will be able to notice that you have porcelain veneers since they blend in seamlessly with your natural tooth structure.

Prepping the Tooth

After removing a very thin layer of enamel, your dentist will place the veneer onto the front surface of the tooth.

Discover the Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are natural-looking dental fabrications that can be placed on the teeth to mask many types of dental imperfections. Porcelain veneers benefits include their appearance, ease of treatment, and more.

Before veneers
Before This patient's teeth suffered from uneven shading and spacing issues.
After veneers
After Veneers provide dramatic effects and a more youthful-looking appearance.

Porcelain veneers are the most versatile dental fabrication available, and they offer a wide range of cosmetic uses. Patients that have the following dental problems may be good candidates for porcelain veneers:

  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Cracks, chips, and fractures
  • Worn down teeth
  • Tooth discoloration, including teeth affected by a yellow, brown, or gray hue and white or dark stains.
  • Minor tooth crowding
  • Teeth that are twisted
  • Teeth that jut out at an odd angle

Although porcelain veneers are not considered a restorative treatment, they do offer some oral health benefits:

  • Protect teeth affected by tooth erosion or lost enamel
  • Improve alignment of the teeth and bite, thereby reducing the risk of tooth erosion, tooth breakage, tooth decay, gum disease, bruxism, TMJ disorder, and sleep apnea
  • Restore strength to teeth affected by cracks, chips, and fractures

Porcelain is one of the most durable dental materials in use today, and is also used in crowns and bridges. Dental fabrications made of porcelain can be expected to last 10 years or more. The lifespan of your porcelain veneers will be dependent on how well you care for your teeth and gums, along with the amount of wear the veneers sustain from the daily forces of biting and chewing. Patients that maintain a good oral health care routine, avoid hard and crunchy foods, and do not chew on their fingernails or other objects will prolong the life of their veneers.

Porcelain veneers are the most versatile dental fabrication available, and they offer a wide range of cosmetic uses.

Natural Appearance

Not only is porcelain one of the most durable dental materials, it also looks the most natural. If you take a close look at your teeth, you will notice that the natural tooth enamel has translucent qualities. Porcelain also has a translucent surface, making the material well suited for use in dental fabrications. In addition to the translucency of porcelain, the material can also be color matched to suit the patient’s preferences.

If you desire, we can match the shade of the porcelain to your natural teeth to produce natural looking results. If your teeth are affected by stains or you prefer a whiter appearance, the veneers can be made in a purer shade of white. You can also elect to undergo whitening before receiving veneers for a more dramatic enhancement. During your consultation, we will review these options and also discuss porcelain veneers vs. Lumineers®

Improved Symmetry

Before This patient's teeth were yellowed, irregularly shaped, and small, which created gaps.
after veneers
After Veneers addressed each concern and completely transformed their smile.

Quick Treatment Process

Considering the dramatic results that can be achieved with porcelain veneers, the treatment process is pretty quick. The preparation and placement of dental veneers is completed in two, one-hour visits to our office. After the first visit, we will place temporary veneers, which will help to improve the appearance of your smile after your first appointment. About one week later, we will place your custom veneers, completing your smile makeover treatment.

Few Associated Risks and Side Effects

Our Belle Meade and Nashville porcelain veneers patients experience few risks and side effects after treatment. Patients may experience some tooth sensitivity after the teeth are prepared for the veneers. The most important factor that patients should be aware of is that treatment is irreversible, so the veneers will have to be replaced if they chip, fall off, or become worn.

Information About  Different Brands of Porcelain Veneers

We offer three porcelain veneer brands: MAC, IPS Empress® and IPS e.max® veneers. At our Nashville, TN, dental office, Dr. Clint Newman will determine which brand of veneer is best suited to your needs, lifestyle, and budget.

porcelain veneers
Not all porcelain veneers are created equal. We provide only the very best on the market.

Our Porcelain Veneer Brands

All of the porcelain veneers brands we provide are created from pressed glass ceramic, which is as beautiful as stacked porcelain options of the past, but much more durable.

MAC Veneers

Thanks to their unique construction, MAC veneers are two to three times more durable than traditional porcelain veneers. That means less damage from wear and tear, longer lifespan, and less need for repair.

The best part is that MAC veneers do not involve a radically different placement process. In fact, the process is identical to the prep and placement of traditional porcelain veneers: a fraction of a millimeter of tooth structure is removed so that an impression can be taken; it is from this impression that the MAC veneer is custom crafted.

We offer three porcelain veneer brands: MAC, IPS Empress®  and IPS e.max® veneers.

Empress Veneers

The IPS Empress® brand veneer is leucite-reinforced ceramic featuring a wide range of shades and layering options. Dr. Newman can match these veneers to the look and shade of your natural teeth. Empress® Esthetic veneers are known for their natural appearance and durability. They can be pressed to certain strengths and layered to create an optimal look that fits your smile.

E.Max Veneers

The IPS e.max® is an alternative porcelain veneer option with an emphasis on durability. These veneers are made of pressed ceramic over lithium disilicate (a high-strength ceramic material). Lithium disilicate and leucite are exceptionally strong materials that are highly durable, but they can also look astonishingly natural. Both e.max® and Empress® veneers are applied using similar processes.

Determining the Best Option

During your initial visit to one of our offices, Dr. Newman will speak with you to establish what brand of veneers is the best choice for you. The two of you may also review porcelain veneer before and after pictures of past patients. The next step is the preparation of your teeth. The porcelain veneers procedure is simple and straightforward and can be completed in one to two appointments.

Our veneers are crafted from the highest-quality porcelain to match your smile precisely.

If gaps and other imperfections are disrupting the symmetry of your smile, porcelain veneers can provide a natural-looking solution.

Porcelain Veneer Candidates

Porcelain veneer candidates must be in good oral health. Patients who suffer from conditions like periodontal disease, tooth decay, or severe bite misalignment must address these conditions before moving ahead with cosmetic treatment. Porcelain veneers are strictly cosmetic, neither protecting the teeth nor treating them for any health condition. Porcelain veneers cannot repair teeth in the way that restorations like crowns and bridges can. They must be attached to healthy teeth.

If you are considering porcelain veneers, you should understand that this treatment is a permanent cosmetic solution. We can review porcelain veneer before and after images during your initial consultation so that you understand the treatment process and potential results. It may also be helpful if you review our porcelain veneers FAQs prior to your consultation.

Since part of your natural enamel is removed during preparation for veneers, your teeth will always require a veneer or other restoration. Each porcelain veneer will eventually need to be replaced. The best porcelain veneer candidates are in good oral health and want to address minor cosmetic imperfections, including:

The best way to determine candidacy for porcelain veneers is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Newman. He and our knowledgeable team will listen to your concerns, questions, and goals to create a plan that works within your schedule and budget. Our team can also review the differences between dental bonding and porcelain veneers, as well as porcelain veneers and Lumineers®, so that patients can consider all options.

Our Porcelain Veneers Patients:
Before and After

Dr. Clint Newman is dedicated to providing exceptional dental solutions and strives to help his patients treat a variety of concerns with natural-looking veneers. Each porcelain veneers before and after image from our Nashville, TN, practice showcases the diversity of veneers as a cosmetic solution, the high-quality materials we use, and the dramatic results that can be achieved with this treatment.

Veneers for Discoloration

While Dr. Newman can address some types of discoloration with teeth whitening or dental bonding, there are many types of stains that are resistant to bleaching agents. When teeth are severely discolored, porcelain veneers are often the best option for providing the desired results. In addition, previous dental treatments, such as bonding or crowns, do not respond to whitening solutions and require an alternative solution. For patients with severe discoloration due to decalcification, fluorosis, trauma, or childhood tetracycline use, Dr. Newman can create lifelike veneers using IPS e.max® for attractive results.

Before Old, discolored bonding affected this patient's front teeth.
After Empress veneers.
After Two Empress veneers concealed the discoloration and brightened her smile.

In the case of the patient pictured above, use of an antibiotic known as tetracycline during childhood had affected the inner layers of the teeth, and the patient was unhappy with the gray appearance. Using IPS e.max® veneers, Dr. Newman was able to conceal the gray discoloration and, in only two weeks, create a bright, attractive smile.

Veneers for a Straighter Smile

Many patients with gaps or spacing issues do not like the idea of undergoing a lengthy orthodontic treatment. Others do not qualify for orthodontics due to other issues, such as the size of their teeth. In these situations, Dr. Newman can use porcelain veneers to conceal gaps and spaces for a more symmetrical and aesthetic smile.

After porcelain veneers.
After Four porcelain veneers placed on the front teeth created a more symmetrical smile.

For the patient pictured above, braces or another orthodontic treatment were not an option, but he was unhappy with the spaces between his teeth. By placing four porcelain veneers on the front teeth, Dr. Newman eliminated the gaps and created the results the patient desired.

Address Multiple Concerns at Once

Porcelain veneers are a highly versatile and beneficial treatment, allowing Dr. Newman to address a variety of conditions with a single procedure. Veneers can perform the work of teeth whiteningdental crowns, and orthodontics all at the same time.

Before porcelain veneers.
Before A history of smoking, bruxism, and alignment issues made this patient self-conscious about their smile.
After porcelain veneers.
After Dr. Newman used eight porcelain veneers to address all of the patient's concerns at once.

The patient above had a history of smoking, which had discolored the teeth. In addition, years of bruxism, a condition which causes you to clench or grind your teeth, had worn down the chewing surfaces. The patient also had concerns about the positioning of his teeth. Using eight porcelain veneers, Dr. Newman adjusted the alignment, restored the natural length of the teeth, and brightened their color for a fully transformed smile.

Replace Old, Unsatisfactory Dental Work

Dr. Newman is dedicated to improving the aesthetics of his patients' smiles. In many cases, patients may have previous dental work which looks unnatural or has broken due to normal wear. Some of these issues may result from lower quality material or changes in teeth and gums. At our practice, we can replace dental work performed by other dentists with high-quality materials for attractive, lifelike results.

What are porcelain veneers?

Crafted from advanced dental ceramic, porcelain veneers are thin shells which fit over the front surface of your teeth to conceal a range of cosmetic issues.

Who is a candidate for porcelain veneers?

Patients with chips, cracks, discoloration, and minor misalignment can see significant improvement in the appearance of their smile after porcelain veneer treatment. There are certain conditions which can limit your candidacy for veneers. Dr. Newman will examine your oral health and determine the most effective treatment option for your needs.

What types of veneers are offered?

We provide three brands of porcelain veneers: MAC veneers, IPS e.max®, and IPS Empress®. All three brands utilize high-end materials for attractive results.

Can porcelain veneers treat all teeth?

Porcelain veneers are used to treat the anterior teeth (the teeth at the front of your smile). For the back teeth, we utilize alternative treatments, such as dental crowns, that can handle the force of the bite more effectively.

How long does it take to receive a porcelain veneer?

Generally, it takes about one to two weeks between making the impressions and receiving the final product from our partner dental laboratory.

What types of imperfections or conditions can be treated with porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are highly versatile and can treat a range of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Crooked or overlapping teeth
  • Misshaped teeth
  • Gaps or spaces between teeth
  • Severe discoloration or staining
  • Disproportionate teeth
  • Chips, cracks, or wear

Is the treatment reversible?

In most cases, porcelain veneers are considered permanent. During the procedure, Dr. Newman will change the structure of your natural teeth to properly place the veneers. Without this process, they would appear bulky and unnatural. The alterations to the enamel of your tooth make porcelain veneers an irreversible treatment.

How long do porcelain veneers typically last?

In general, porcelain veneers last between five and 10 years. For some patients, they can last even longer. The life expectancy of your veneers depends on several factors, including proper maintenance, which can help improve their longevity.

What maintenance is required for porcelain veneers?

You can care for your porcelain veneers the same way as your natural teeth by routinely brushing and flossing them. We can also monitor the health of your veneers along with your other teeth at your biannual appointment.

In general, porcelain veneers last between five and 10 years. For some patients, they can last even longer.

Patients should avoid chewing hard, non-food items, such as pens, and using your teeth as tools, since veneers are more likely to chip or crack than your natural teeth. You can maintain the color of your veneers by limiting your consumption of dark-colored drinks, such as wine, coffee, tea, or soda. Tobacco products can also stain your veneers.

Veneers vs. Lumineers® Similarities and Differences

When comparing porcelain veneers vs. Lumineers®, it is important for patients to understand their similarities and differences. Lumineers® are a brand of veneers that requires minor or no alteration to the existing tooth structure. However, this treatment can result in a thicker tooth that may be more difficult to clean and floss. For patients in the Nashville, TN, area, Dr. Clint Newman offers three of the finest porcelain veneer materials that are superior to Lumineers® in terms of long-term results and patient satisfaction.

Close-up of a veneer.
Veneers and Lumineers® are custom-made to blend seamlessly with your smile.

Similarities: Veneers and Lumineers®

Both treatments enhance the appearance of your smile by concealing flaws, such as misalignment, discoloration, chips, cracks, and other issues. In addition, veneers and Lumineers® are thin shells of dental porcelain, custom-made to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. In general, porcelain veneers and Lumineers® cost about the same.

Differences: Veneers and Lumineers®

When considering which type of veneer to choose, it is important to consider the main differences between the two products. Lumineers® are fabricated using Cerinate® porcelain, an exceptionally strong material which allows for very thin shells. However, to compensate for the thinness of Lumineers®, the material must be more opaque than thicker veneers to properly conceal the underlying imperfections. In contrast, traditional veneers are more translucent, allowing the material to closely mimic the reflective qualities of natural teeth.

The thickness of veneers and Lumineers® also affects the method for placing them. With ultra-thin Lumineers®, little to no enamel is removed before placing the restoration. Therefore, the natural structure of your tooth is maintained and the procedure is reversible. Porcelain veneers, however, are thicker and require Dr. Newman to remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of the treated teeth. This process ensures your veneers fit properly in your smile without appearing bulky.

The Disadvantages of Lumineers®

Due to their thin design, Lumineers® generally cannot provide the same lifelike results as Dr. Newman's high-quality porcelain veneers. They do not possess the same light-handling characteristics as traditional veneers and often cannot adequately mask the color of the tooth underneath, especially if you have severe discoloration.

In addition, since the underlying teeth are not altered in any way, patients' teeth may appear large or bulky. Lumineers® are also more likely to affect your speech, biting habits, and comfort than traditional veneers. For many patients, Lumineers® are more difficult to keep clean, which can lead to oral health concerns.
